Maximal Space aims to explore public buildings where there is an ultimate use of capacity – this may be a tangible use of space through objects, or a visual use, achieved through 2D media.
These hard to define spaces often share common features, which manifest themselves through the experiences and responses of visitors.
Maximal Space consequently documents these spaces using photography and words, in an attempt to capture this visitor experience.
In a fast changing world where curatorial trends and visitor expectations are constantly changing, I feel it is valuable to record these spaces before they alter, or disappear completely.

have you ever heard of a place called Mr Heavers Model Museum? its an almost forgotten relic of my childhood, somewhere in Kent in a converted Oast house. a collection of dioramas and models built from salvaged materials, it was mostly space themed by I would award it about 70% of the responsibility for my career in architecture!
it seemed to close and move at some point in the early 90’s, but i’ve not been able to find it since.
I haven’t heard of Mr Heavers and I can’t find any information about it anywhere (frustratingly). I am now determined to discover more though! Will ask around and see if anyone else remembers, and get back to you. It would be amazing to find some photos. A place that can inspire a career is definitely worth remembering 🙂
